Raw Food Feeding Tips!
First off, I am no expert! These are tips from my experience and tips from research I've done for awhile..
My video on Gohan on Raw: https://youtu.be/2Op1Tz83Xrg
Raw feeding can be confusing at first, but once done right, it can be super beneficial for your dogs. I was previously feeding Gohan kibble for 3 years, and making the change was something I thought would never happen. But after watching "Pet Fooled" (You can watch on Netflix or google it,) it changed my mind forever..
Raw feeding is actually quite simple once you get the hang of it, but doing research is your best bet. It has to be done right to ensure you give your dog a complete balanced diet. I am currently using a raw feeding service that ships Gohan his food every two weeks. The company is called Reel Raw and I can't thank them enough! They make sure Gohan has everything he needs based on his weight and age. They can tailor your order to make sure you get everything your dog needs and they are an awesome service! If you don't want to do raw feeding through a company service, you can go out to your local food store and gather up items needed. But again, please do research! before doing so. I am no expert, but after doing lots of research, here are some tips I can write for you..
Switching From Kibble To Raw
If you decide to make the switch, keep in mind that your dog's diet should be 80% Meat, 10% Organs and 10% Bone. The diet should be 2%-3% of your dogs total weight. You can feed them once, or twice a day.
If you have a puppy, please do research on puppy eating raw because that I don't know much on. I only can speak on adults dogs only due to that only being what I know.
The first weeks can make your dog look "worse" than before. That is normal because your dog is in a detox after eating kibble for so long. You should see changes in their poop and maybe even coat. On the first week, it won't look pretty but again, that is normal because your dog is cleansing his/her body from the kibble food. After a week or so (depending on dog and how long they have been eating kibble) you should start to see better changes after a few weeks on raw.
So after you got that figured out, it's time to start raw! When switching to kibble to raw, DO NOT mix kibble with the raw. Kibble digests differently than raw and that can cause more harm then good. Do the switch from the start. "Cold turkey" as they say. For example, the night before you give your dog his/her last kibble meal, then the morning after give them the raw food straight. The night before you want to switch you can also not feed your dog kibble and let your dog not eat that night. That way they can fully get rid of the kibble meal.
You want to start with one meat type protein for the first weeks. I recommend chicken necks or chicken backs because it is easily digestible and it will get your dog used to raw. Both chicken necks and backs contain bone, so that is a great first choice in start. Your dog should take his time eating raw as well. They chew on the food and that makes it easy for them to digest.
After a week, you can choose another part of chicken. For example chicken thighs, or anything chicken based. Make sure you still choose something with bones in them. Bones contain calcium and is very much needed for dogs. NEVER feed your dog cooked bones because those can splinter and potentially kill your dog. The bone should be raw and should have some meat on it. Raw bones don't splinter and are 100% safe. Just always keep an eye to make sure they are chewing it. If you are feeding just patties/ground beef or anything ground, it won't contain bone so that is not enough. Your dog needs something with a bone or if not the bone should be blended into the ground patty you choose.
After a few weeks, you can slowly start giving your dog another type of meat with the same concept. Don't forget the raw meaty bones! Gohan gets meats like turkey, pork, buffalo, lamb, rabbit, green tripe, and beef. Start slowly and don't rush the feeding when introducing them to new meats. See what they like and what they don't like and go from there. This is a mini process so take your time, no rush!
I recommend giving your dog 1 fish oil capsule every day with their raw food meal. That is very good for your dog! It is good for their skin, coat and overall health!
You can also throw in a few raw eggs a week. Give your dog the egg shell too, but make sure you chop it finely for them. Egg shells contain calcium which is a bonus. Although keep in mind that egg shells aren't enough calcium for a dog in a day. They still need a raw bone. Egg shells are just a bonus!
By the third week to a month, you should really start to see changes for the better!
These are just some tips I can offer, but again PLEASE do more research before going into this.
